On the Yellow Bus

As I reached the top of our road this morning, with no definite plans of where to go, I saw the Yellow Hop On Hop Off Bus arrive. It does a circular tour along the south coast, with the furthest point being Câmara de Lobos. There was a commentary provided via headphones in 10 languages. Once I had found English, I was good to go.

I must say the trip was not suitable for anyone prone to travel sickness. The bus sped along, up and down and round bends. It was quite a hair-raising experience. Madeira is such a hilly island and today was still very windy, tossing the leaves of all the banana trees and almost tearing them to bits. When we came near the coast, the Atlantic looked very stormy.

This photo was taken at the highest point of the trip, the Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint:

This is looking down at the harbour of Camera de Lobos, stop number 13.

This little town was a favourite haunt of Winston Churchill, who used to set up his easel and paint. There are various establishments commemorating him. I must say, he was also a regular visitor to Gibraltar and Marrakech as he escaped the British winter at taxpayers expense, but when did he do his job in London? He couldn’t get away with it now!

I was relieved to get off the Yellow Bus and needed some sustenance. For lunch, I fancied something different and dropped into the Kanji Sushi bar:

Very tasty and very fresh (and the house wine was Mateus Rose).

  1. I love those on/off busses. They are on the national square in DC, too.
