Broome Day Three continued

The 3 girls went for a walk on Cable Beach after breakfast. It was quite windy out there. E wanted to collect a lot of shells to make a heart shape in the sand, which took a long time!

We lazed about all afternoon and then at 4.30 we drove to Gantheaume Point to see the sunset. Naturally we loaded up with G and T and nibbles, which we consumed greedily as the sun went down. A line of kayaks went by and several planes came into land. The shadows climbed over the red rocks and suddenly it was coming dark.

There are dinosaur footprints there, too:

We had dinner at the Bali Hai restaurant which was delicious. We should have eaten here sooner. E had sushi, beautifully prepared by their own female sushi chef. J had vegetable curry, M had laksa and C had tofu in peanut sauce, all made by the Chinese chef. The owner of the resort, Andy, rolled by in his wheelchair and had a long chat with us. He was entertaining a group of friends on a table for 10.

Broome Day Three

First, a few photos of the Bali Hai Resort, where J and M are staying for 5 nights and C and E are having an extra 4 after that. The first 2 pics are a night shot of the entrance:

The next photos are taken in E and C's bedroom:

The lampshade is made with pressed bird flowers and the wardrobe doors also feature pressed flowers and leaves.  This is the view from one of the windows:

Karijini to Port Hedland

Had a very early start. Claire got up before 6.30 to watch the sunrise.

We quickly packed the car and went for breakfast in the restaurant., and were on the road by 8.30. It was a gravel road of 33 kms to the Visitors Centre. This had not been upgraded since John and Margaret last visited 6 years ago, said John. When we emerged, disaster struck in the form of a flat tyre.

Luckily a nice young man came to our rescue. He jacked up the car and changed the tyre in no time! He was filthy with red dust from underneath the vehicle. It was fortunate that JL had blown up the spare before setting off. Geoffrey's boys had put in a substandard jack, so our Good Samaritan had to fetch his own.

Back on our way to Auski with spectacular scenery. The final leg to Port Hedland was a battle with road trains, although most drivers were helpful indicating when it was safe to overtake. Shady lunch stops were hard to find.

Arriving in PH, our first priority was to get our spare tyre repaired. Then we checked into Cooke Point Caravan Park where we had booked a 2-bedroom chalet. It was very close to the seashore, so Ellie and Margaret a went for a walk on the beach whilst John and Claire went to get the tyre fixed. We met our neighbours from Karijini in another chalet. Near the beach were some bird flowers - the first of this trip.

We went out to dinner at the Esplanade Hotel. Excellent food and a nice ambience outside on the courtyard. JL had seafood pilaf, Claire had vegetarian eggplant w haloumi, M had barramundi and E had Nemo's crumbled snapper. We had a bottle of sparkling and felt all was right with the world after our traumatic day.

Broome Day Two

Broome Saturday Markets  are a "must do". They are as vibrant as ever, more so!  We all bought something, except J. For E a glass lizard, for M a print of Kimberly wildlife, for C a Japanese papier-mâché bangle.

Morning tea in town at Dragonfly Cafe. Then on to Broome Jetty. We walked along to the end, and observed a small cruise ship with its own helicopter. There was also a rig tender and lorries were delivering fuel, water, pipes and other supplies. We saw several people fishing and one man caught a 50 centimetre large fish to his delight. C observed an osprey flying back and forth over the jetty looking for a feed.

In the evening we went for a swish meal at the Cable Beach Club Sunset Bar: J and M had barrundi, E had snapper and C had a delicious bouillabaisse. We were too full for dessert. M just caught the last of the sunset before the others arrived.

A poor day weatherwise: very cloudy, cool and a bit drizzly. Our first stop was Woolworths to stock up with a trolley full of supplies for our unit. C had already been for an early morning run on Cable Beach and M had been for a swim in the Bali Hai pool (chased by the Creepy Crawly which was cleaning the bottom).

In the afternoon, J and M went for a walk on Cable Beach. Both the red and the blue camels were returning from their trips and unloading passengers one by one.

For dinner M cooked a delicious Spaghetti Marinara, followed by strawberries and Greek yoghurt. A  bottle of Mateus Rose was consumed

Later we discovered a little green frog in our outdoor bathroom.

Perth to Cue

Perth to Cue (645kms)

Left Burswood at 9.30 am. Morning tea at New Norcia. Made  good progress on the road, apart from a long stretch of roadworks and many oversize loads. At lunchtime we stopped at a layby, where the toilet was horrendous and disgusting, said Ellie ( refusing to avail herself of it).

Good views of the hills around Mt Gibson and Mt Singleton. The crops were in good shape because of early rain and the fields were green. Very few signs of wildlife. Little road kill. No live kangaroos and few birds.

Arrived in Cue as the sun was setting at about 5.30 pm and checked into the Murchison Club Hotel.  We wasted no time in repairing to the pub for a beer, followed by F and C in the dining room.
